Why are my Alerts not Triggering

Why a Sentry alert didn't fire or send a notification, and which alert, integration, and notification settings to check.

Issue

An event shows up in Sentry, but the expected Alert didn't send a notification to the configured destination (Slack, email, etc.).

Applies To

  • Alerts

  • Monitors

  • Notifications

Symptoms

  • No notification was sent, even though the Alert fired for the same issue before.

  • The Alert fired when the issue was first created but not when new events arrived later.

Resolution

Open the Alert under Monitors → Alerts and work through these checks:

  1. Alert history: On the details page, check whether the Alert ran for this issue. If it ran, skip ahead to the action and recipient checks.

  2. Status: Make sure the Alert is turned on.

  3. Source: Make sure the issue's project is included. If the Alert uses Alert on specific monitors, make sure the connected Monitors are the ones that create this issue.

  4. Environment: Make sure the Alert's environment matches the event's environment tag.

  5. Triggers (When): A new issue is created fires only once per issue. To be notified about later activity, add An event or issue activity is captured, An issue escalates, or A resolved issue regresses. Manually unresolving an issue doesn't count as a regression.

    • Filters (If):

      • Make sure the event matches the block's filters under its all, any, or none qualifier.

      • Watch for filters that stop matching as the issue changes: Issue age, Issue priority, and Issue assignment.

      • Look for warning icons. Frequency and event attribute filters only work with A new issue is created and An event or issue activity is captured.

    • Actions (Then):

      • Make sure the block has a valid action.

      • For Notify on preferred channel, make sure the recipient exists. Suggested Assignees require an assignee, ownership rules, or suspect commits.

      • For Slack, Teams, PagerDuty, and similar integrations, make sure the integration is installed under Settings → Integrations and the destination is still valid.

      • Use Send Test Notification to confirm delivery.

  6. Throttling: Make sure the throttle window isn't suppressing repeat notifications for the issue.

  7. Personal notification settings: Under Settings → Notifications → Alerts, make sure alerts are on, the delivery method (email, Slack) is selected, no project-level override turns them off, and Email Routing points to the right address.
